Christian Nation?
I recently read part of a discussion online about whether the United States is a “Christian nation.” The thought that struck me was, “Who cares?”
I don’t mean to be offensive. But seriously—why is it so important to us to call our nation a Christian nation? What difference does it make?
We do not live in a culture that loves Jesus. I don’t mean pockets of...
My Sensible Wife
Me: “If you were a band, what would you be called?”
Sarah: “Something really sensible. Maybe ‘Sensible.’”
Secession
I like the idea of secession. I think it might be pretty cool if one or more states decided to drop out of the United States and become separate countries. I actually think that splitting the U.S. up into five, ten, or maybe even fifty separate countries might be a great thing for us and for the rest of the world.
So … is that reprehensible? Does it sound “un-American”? It...

Just Do Something
Sarah and I just read Just Do Something by Kevin DeYoung. We loved it.
A few years ago, as a result of various influences, I began to give up my search for God’s mysterious plan for my life. I began to see, as it was pointed out to me, that doing God’s will is mostly about doing the things that are plainly revealed in Scripture—not agonizing over trying to figure out the future. What...

Just listened to a great sermon from John Piper on “This is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.” I might have to go right back and listen to it again. =)

A Disappointment
I’ve been playing some soccer lately with friends from church. It has been a blast, but I do tend to have trouble walking for a couple days afterward.
When I get out on the field and start to run, I feel that I am cool. I am fast. I am powerful. I feel the spirit of the gazelle coursing through my body. I am not only swift and strong—I am graceful.
And then I come home and look at some...
“You come of the Lord Adam and the Lady Eve,” said Aslan. “And that is both honor enough to erect the head of the poorest beggar, and shame enough to bow the shoulders of the greatest emperor on earth. Be content.”
— C. S. Lewis, in Prince Caspian
“You have a traitor there, Aslan,” said the Witch. Of course everyone present knew that she meant Edmund. But Edmund had got past thinking about himself after all he’d been through and after the talk he’d had that morning. He just went on looking at Aslan. It didn’t seem to matter what the Witch said.

Pet Peeves
Isn’t it strange that we tend to talk about our pet peeves as if they were things to be proud of rather than things to repent of?

God Is Not My Backup Generator
I was fretting about something this morning, so I was looking at Psalm 71.
In you, O Lord, do I take refuge;
let me never be put to shame! (Psalm 71:1 ESV)
I was struck by the idea that when I take refuge in God—when I put my trust in Him—it shouldn’t be a backup plan. God is not a backup generator that kicks in when the power goes out.
I think I treat God as a backup generator....
I always wanted to go to a dump.

My Heretical Views on the Election
I’m not going to vote for John McCain or Sarah Palin.
Lesser of Two Evils
I don’t think the phrase “lesser of two evils” should characterize a Christian’s voting choices.
I think voting for John McCain because he is the “lesser of two evils” is kind of like the way some foods are marketed. A food item is supposed to be good for you because it is low in...

Joyfully Plundered
Dealing with taxes is possibly my least favorite thing to do. It’s painful on a number of levels. It’s a hassle to figure out. It costs a lot of money. I tend to be fretful and obsessive about the little details. And on top of all that, I have to go and become a libertarian and gain a much stronger belief that most of the things my tax money goes to are unjust and foolish. I have a...
